James’s most recent project entitled, “Foxy Cleopatra” is an homage to the Blaxploitation film genre of the 1970s for Vogue Italia. The story along with the photos are part of James’s fashion book which is currently in production. In the story, James writes about some of his favorite films from the genre including: “Foxy Brown,” “Cleopatra Jones,” and “TNT Jackson.” James was also asked to style a story to go with the written piece. Using “Mahogany” and “Cleopatra Jones” as his main inspiration, James teamed with famed fashion photographer Marcus Derricotte’ to style AIM New York model Ashley Hart.
James decided to partner with fashion designer Jovan O’Connor exclusively for this shoot. As an added incentive, James pulled jewelry directly from the lifestyle boutique Miss Mahogany. Hair for the shoot was done by Gretchen Williams with makeup by Jenaya Allman.
“The 70s are a hot trend right now in fashion – but no one has written or styled an editorial quite like this before from the angle of fashion from the Blaxploitation genre. This story is especially important to me because it’s part of the book that I’m working on. It’s always an honor to be in business with Vogue. Any project I do for them is a thrill.”
We’ve put together a video of the shoot exclusively for Styled by James. Special thanks to cinematographer and director Wolf Mearns.
